APPLYING FOR A STUDENT VISA IN AUSTRALIA

Getting a study visa required to study abroad in Australia may be difficult, but the process is quite clear if you follow the steps correctly – in addition, it’s all worth it in the end!

Our step-by-step guide makes it easy for you to apply for an Australian student visa.

What student visa do you need?

Applying for an Australian student visa was a complex process. Students who are known to deal with simplified visas will have to choose the “sub-category” of the visa according to their individual track and status. Fortunately, the process to make applying for an Australian student visa has been made much easier for international students!

Therefore, all prospective university students must now apply for a single student visa (subclass 500) no matter which course they choose. If you are a graduate and want to stay in Australia after your studies, you must apply for a temporary graduate visa (sub-category 485). For anyone considering shorter study periods, you can apply for a visitor visa or work.

How much does a student visa cost?

However, there may be additional costs for health certificates and checks, depending on the evidence you are asked to provide. To check exactly how much you’re paying, you can use the visa rate table. Payments can be made either by credit card or debit.

Temporary Graduate Visa (485 subclass)

If you plan to stay in Australia after your studies, you can apply for a temporary visa to graduate. When you apply for this visa, you will need to decide between the Postgraduate Work Stream or the Post-Study Track, which varies in the time you are allowed to stay in Australia temporarily after the course ends.

Do you want to know more about the Temporary Graduate Visa?

In order to qualify for a student visa (sub-category 500) in Australia, you will need to:

Be at least 6 years old

The study was accepted at an Australian educational institution

You have health insurance

How do I apply for an Australian student visa?

Students must first be admitted to full-time study before the application process begins and will be able to demonstrate their status through electronic confirmation or letter of registration from their institution. Your institution must be included in the CRICOS register to provide you with a place.

Once you have a place at an Australian university and pay your deposit, you will receive an eCoE by e-mail, specifying the total course fees, duration, and start date. You will need details of this form to apply for a visa.

To officially begin applying for a student visa, you will need to create your own financial account where you can download the required evidence.

What guide do I need to submit?

To qualify for an Australian student visa, you will need to provide specific evidence. Although what you are asked to provide may vary depending on the individual. However, the following are the main requirements for the Australian student visa (subclass 500):

Each candidate applying for a student visa must demonstrate that he wishes to live in Australia on a temporary basis only. Each student will be assigned to a personal immigration officer, who will evaluate his or her individual visa and circumstances and determine the duration of his or her intended stay. More specific information about GTE requirements can be found here.

English

You may need to demonstrate your proficiency in English (IELTS scores) and your academic qualifications. Any translation of material must be done by an interpreter accredited by the National Accreditation and Translators Authority (NAATI). However, exceptions may mean that you do not need to provide proof of your English abilities.

Financial capacity

You may also need to provide proof of your money until a student visa is approved. More specific information about funds for a student visa can be found here.

Health

You may be asked to complete a health examination when applying for a student visa, which may take several weeks. It is good to organize a health check with your doctor before applying to avoid any delay. While studying abroad, it is also necessary to obtain health insurance not only for your safety and well-being – but also because you may be asked to provide proof of that in your visa application.

Letter

Because Australia is known for strict immigration laws, your application will be evaluated for several reasons. One potentially surprising consideration is “personal strength”. For example, this assessment may be considered a criminal record as a measure of “good character”.

To find out exactly what guides you will need to provide for a student visa, you can use the Australian Government Documents Checklist tool. Or you can find more information on student visas and eligibility requirements in the Visa section of the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Keep your visa

Australian student visas are conditional, so even after you have successfully obtained a license, you must comply with a set number of conditions to keep, as shown below:

Attendance in the classroom and academic progress must be satisfactory

You must remain enrolled in a registered course

You must maintain adequate health insurance

You must continue to meet the initial requirements of the visa: no adequate funds, the study program itself

You must notify your organization of your current address within 7 days of your arrival in Australia

Can I work on a student visa?

Once you start the course, you can work up to 40 hours every two weeks during the semester (and unlimited hours outside the semester). This does not include unpaid volunteer work or what is part of your studies. In order to work and (more importantly!) Get the money, you must have a tax file number, which you can apply for it through the Australian Tax Office.

How long does it take to process my visa?

According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, 75% of student visa applications are processed within one month of application. Providing all necessary paperwork in a timely manner may also help reduce delays in your application.
